OHSU neuroscientist Dr. Larry Sherman, with help from musicians from the Portland Chamber Orchestra and singer Valerie Day, will give a multi-media presentation that explores how listening to music and practicing music can influence brain development and brain aging. For those who have heard Dr. Sherman’s presentation in the past, this lecture/performance focuses on newer studies and includes music ranging from the Beatles to Bach. The presentation is in memory of Valerie Layton, a great friend of the arts in Portland. Proceeds will go to the Valerie and George Layton Memorial Fund to support the music and outreach activities of the Portland Chamber Orchestra.

Here’s an audio clip of the recent conversation that John and Valerie had with Andrea Murray from All Classical 89.9. In it you’ll hear about the man behind the orchestrations for Brain Chemistry for Lovers, the collaboration with the Portland Chamber Orchestra, and…..how Jimi Hendrix thwarted one medical career!
